The hotel has been built within the UNESCO Global Geopark, and is the next step in turning The Blue Lagoon resort, which comprises of The Retreat hotel, Retreat spa, the Moss restaurant, Lava restaurant and the Silica Hotel, into a centre for health and wellness.
The hotel comprises of both custom-made prefabricated elements and others cast in situ from the indigenous lava rocks. The Retreat features 62 stunning suits, all with a minimalist, Icelandic aesthetic. All include floor-to-ceiling windows offering a unique view of the volcanic landscape and geothermal lagoon.
Lava is also used in a number of other ways throughout the hotel from flooring, service desks in the reception area and even tables in the Moss and Lava Restaurants.
The Retreat utilises the surrounding lagoon’s natural beauty, sliding seamlessly into the landscape with minimal environmental impact. It has also been constructed with flexibility to enable further additions or alternations to be made in response to unexpected environmental changes to the landscape.
