With Spring almost upon us, Ikea have revealed a stunning new furniture collection created in conjunction with some of Africa’s top designers – called Overallt.
Never one to maintain the status quo, Ikea, who are currently in the midst of completely revamping their business model to fall in line with sustainable and environmentally friendly consumer habits, are teaming up with top African interior designers to bring a stunning, colour infused, collection every home will need this spring and summer.
The project, which includes large pieces of furniture, tableware, textiles, sustainable tote bags, along with a number of other limited edition items, is the result of a partnership with Design Indaba.
Ikea hopes the project will show the world that there is an explosion of creativity coming out of Africa today.
Why the collaboration?
The idea of the collaboration is aimed at introducing more to African culture and creating a new voice for the continent.
Five countires are represented by major African artists including; Issa Diabaté, Selly Raby Kane, Naeem Biviji and Bethan Rayner, Bibi Seck, Mariam Hazem and Hend Riad, Renee Rossouw, Sindiso Khumalo and Laduma Ngxokolo were chosen to represent Africa in the Overallt collection..
Together, with Ikea designers Mikael Axelsson, Ina Vuorivirta, Kevin Gouriou, Johanna Jelinek and Hanna Dalrot, the group explore everyday modern urban rituals – thinking specifically about socialising around food, living, both indoor and outdoor, identity and sustainability.
What is included?
The design and development process the group undertook has resulted in a collection of products that are all about building bridges and making better use of the urban living room with friends and family.
The collection features outdoor and indoor furniture, bags, storeage solutions, cushions, blankets, rugs, cookware and tableware items.
The collection will be available in all Ikea stores from May 2019.
