Coinciding with National Recycling Week, The French Bedroom Company has launched the UK’s first plastic free mattress.
‘My Kind Mattress’ is handmade in the UK from naturally flame retardant organic materials, and is 100% recyclable, biodegradable, chemical free and made from sustainable materials.
Naturally organic, it’s made from sustainable layers of natural materials of flax insulator, organic cotton, and hand-teased organic wool, while its steel metal springs are all encased in a layer of 100% organic unbleached cotton ticking.
Between 5.9 and 6.2 million mattresses are sent to landfill each year, weighing an estimated 167,000 tonnes (the equivalent to 92,800 cars) and taking up 3.6 million cubic metres of landmass (the equivalent of 32,000 double decker buses).
This latest innovation means this mattress will biodegrade entirely within 1-3 years in landfill.
The mattress is also 100% chemical free meaning no fire retardant chemicals.
Costing over £1,000 for a single bed, it isn’t necessarily the most budget friendly bedroom addition but it does point the way towards a promising plastic free future for the home.
